Training power versus endurance
What power and endurance actually mean for climbers, how to tell which one is holding you back, and how to train each without neglecting the other.
There are two ways climbers fall off. The first is sudden and obvious: you pull onto a move, your fingers cannot hold the position, and you are off before you have really started. The second is slow and grim: you are ten moves up, your forearms have turned to concrete, the holds are still there but your hands simply will not close. The first is mostly a power problem. The second is mostly an endurance problem. Knowing which one is dropping you off the wall changes everything about how you should train.
Most climbers train whichever one they are already good at, because it feels nice. The strong, powerful boulderer keeps doing limit boulder problems and wonders why they get pumped on routes. The enduring route climber keeps doing laps and wonders why hard single moves shut them down. Progress usually comes from training the thing you are worse at, which is annoying, because it is the less fun thing.
What the words actually mean
Power, in climbing terms, is your ability to produce a lot of force quickly. It is what gets you through a single very hard move, a powerful pull, a big throw, a desperate latch on a small hold. Strength and power are close cousins here. When a problem has one savage move that you simply cannot do, that is a power or strength limitation.
Endurance is your ability to keep going. It comes in two flavours that are worth separating. Strength-endurance, sometimes called power-endurance, is your capacity to do a series of hard moves in a row before you blow up, think a bouldery sport route with no rests. Aerobic endurance is your ability to keep climbing for a long time on easier terrain, recovering as you go.
Most climbing sits somewhere on this spectrum. A short, brutal boulder problem is nearly all power. A long, steep, pumpy sport route is mostly strength-endurance. A big alpine day on easy ground leans on aerobic endurance. Knowing where your target climbs sit tells you what to train.
Working out which is holding you back
The good news is that diagnosing this is straightforward if you pay attention to how you fail. Ask yourself what actually happens when you come off.
- You fall trying a single hard move that you cannot do even fresh. That points to power.
- You can do every move on a route in isolation, but link them and you blow up. That points to strength-endurance.
- You feel fine on the hard bits but slowly fade over a long, sustained climb. That points to aerobic endurance.
The move you fall on tells you the truth. If you can do every move separately but never link them, you do not have a strength problem, you have an endurance problem dressed up as one.
It is worth being honest here, because climbers love to blame the wrong thing. Plenty of people convince themselves they need more finger strength when what they actually need is to stop getting so pumped. Training power
If power is your limiter, the principle is high intensity and full recovery. You want to be doing hard moves while fresh, then resting properly so the next attempt is also done fresh.
In practice that means limit bouldering: problems at or near your absolute max, just a few moves long, with long rests of several minutes between proper goes. The aim is quality, not quantity. A handful of genuinely maximal attempts beats twenty mediocre ones. Finger strength is the foundation under all of it, and it is also the thing most likely to get you hurt if you rush. Build it patiently and respect the warning signs, as we lay out in building finger strength without getting hurt. Power training rewards the impatient with injuries.
Training endurance
If endurance is your limiter, the principle flips: more volume, less rest, lower intensity per move. You are training your forearms to keep working as the pump builds and to recover while still climbing.
For strength-endurance, the classic tools are circuits and intervals. Pick a set of moves that are hard but doable, and climb them for a sustained stretch, somewhere around the length of effort your target routes demand, then rest and repeat. The feeling you are chasing is a deep, building pump that you push through rather than a single max effort. Boards work well for this kind of session too, with the right problems chosen.
For aerobic endurance, the work is gentler and longer. Lots of easy mileage, climbing well within yourself, traversing or doing easy laps, keeping moving and keeping the pump low. It is the least glamorous training there is and the most neglected, but it builds the recovery base that lets everything else work.
Don't train them at the same time
Here is the mistake that wastes a lot of effort. Power and endurance pull your body in different directions, and trying to maximise both in the same session, or even the same few weeks, tends to give you a mediocre version of each. The standard answer is to focus, spending a block of weeks leaning into one before switching emphasis to the other.
A rough structure many climbers use is to build a base of endurance and general fitness first, then sharpen power and strength in a focused block closer to when they want to perform. The details depend hugely on your goals and your time, but the principle holds: pick a focus for a while rather than chasing everything at once.
And do not forget that technique quietly trumps both. A pumped climber with good footwork and efficient movement outlasts a stronger one who over-grips every hold. A lot of what looks like an endurance problem is really wasted energy, gripping too hard, hanging off bent arms, fighting bad body positions. Sometimes the cheapest endurance gains come from learning to climb with straighter arms, bent legs and weight on your feet rather than your fingers.
So watch how you fall, train the weakness rather than the strength, focus on one quality at a time, and keep your technique sharp underneath it all. The fastest way to climb harder is usually to stop training the thing you are already good at.
