Static or dynamic? Choosing how to move

When to move slow and controlled and when to commit to a dynamic move — and why both belong in your toolkit.

Two ways to reach the next hold

Every move you make on the wall sits somewhere on a line between fully static and fully dynamic. A static move is slow and controlled: you pull yourself to the next hold under tension, and at any point you could stop, reverse, and come back down. A dynamic move uses momentum: you generate movement with your legs and core, then catch the hold while you are travelling. The dyno, where both hands and sometimes both feet leave the wall, is the extreme end of dynamic, but most dynamic moves are far less dramatic than that.

A lot of climbers pick a default and stick with it. People who started indoors on slabby walls often climb everything static, locking off and reaching slowly even when it costs them. People who came up on steep boards often throw for everything, even holds they could have reached calmly. Both habits leave climbs on the table. The skill worth building is choosing.

When static earns its keep

Static climbing shines when the target hold is bad, when balance is delicate, or when the consequences of missing are high.

If the next hold is a small crimp or a poor sloper, you want to arrive slowly and settle your fingers onto it before you commit weight. Catch a sloper dynamically and your hand skids off the moment it lands. Move into it static and you can feel for the best part of the hold and let your grip set.

Static is also the move of choice on slabs and balance-heavy terrain, where momentum just throws you off your feet. And it is the safer option when you are climbing above a bad landing, near a ledge, or working out a sequence you do not know yet. Moving slowly lets you bail.

The cost is energy. Locking off and reaching slowly is enormously demanding on your fingers and pulling muscles, especially on steep ground. Climb a 40-degree overhang entirely static and you will pump out long before a climber who lets momentum do some of the work.

When dynamic is the answer

Dynamic moves are about borrowing momentum so your fingers do not have to do all the holding. On steep walls this is not flashy, it is efficient. If you generate movement from your feet and hips, the next hold arrives at the top of that motion with very little weight on your hands for an instant, and you grab it there.

Reach for dynamic when:

  • The move is long and a static lock-off would be desperate or impossible.
  • The holds you are pulling from are decent enough to push off, but you would burn out holding a slow reach.
  • The target hold is positive — a jug or a deep pocket — so a slightly imprecise catch is forgiving.
  • The intermediate position is a no-hands-worth-staying spot anyway, so there is nothing to gain by going slowly.

The honest catch is that dynamic moves are less precise and harder to reverse. Commit to a dyno and miss, and you are coming off. So you trade control for reach and energy.

Reading the move

The real answer is almost always a blend. Most good climbing is mostly static with dynamic moments dropped in where they pay off, or mostly dynamic with a static catch onto a tricky hold. Before you pull on, ask two questions. How good is the hold I am going to, and how good are the holds I am leaving. Good destination, commit and move fast. Bad destination, slow down and arrive under control. Bad holds to pull from, you may have no choice but to generate momentum because you cannot afford to hang there.

The best way to feel the difference is to repeat a problem you already have wired and deliberately climb it the wrong way. Force everything static, then force everything dynamic. You will quickly feel where each one fits, and that sense is what eventually lets you pick the right tool without thinking. If you log your attempts as you work a problem, you can note which version of a move actually stuck — small detail, but it saves relearning the beta next session.
