Board angles, explained
From slab to roof: what the degrees mean on an adjustable board and how they change a problem.
If you are new to adjustable boards, the first confusing thing is the number on the wall. Someone says they climbed a problem at 40, and you nod along without quite knowing what 40 means or why it matters. Here is what the degrees actually describe and how each range feels under your hands.
What the number measures
The angle is how far the wall leans back from vertical. Zero degrees is a flat, vertical wall, straight up and down. As the number climbs, the wall tilts towards you, so 45 degrees is leaning back halfway between vertical and a flat ceiling, and a true roof would be 90.
That overhang changes where your weight goes. On a vertical wall, you stand on your feet and your hands mostly keep you balanced. As the wall leans back, gravity starts pulling you off it, so more and more of your weight hangs from your fingers and your core has to fight to keep your hips in. The bigger the number, the harder you have to pull just to stay on.
The ranges and how they feel
Most adjustable boards swing through a wide arc, and each part of it climbs differently:
- Around 20 to 25 degrees feels slabby and balance-led. Feet matter most, fingers least.
- Around 30 to 40 degrees is the popular middle ground, steep enough to train pulling but still standing on feet.
- Around 45 to 55 degrees is properly steep, where body tension and finger strength dominate and feet cut easily.
- Up past 60 degrees you are into near-roof territory, all core and power, where keeping your toes on at all is the challenge.
Most LED boards grade their problems at a reference angle, commonly 40 degrees. That is worth remembering, because the same set of holds becomes a very different climb as you move the wall.
How the angle rewrites a problem
Take one problem and steepen the board, and you change far more than the difficulty number. Holds that felt like jugs at 25 degrees turn into crimps you can barely hold at 50, because you are now hanging more weight off the same edge. A foothold you happily stood on becomes a smear you have to keep tension on or your feet swing off.
The moves themselves change character too. On a shallow angle you can often reach statically, weight over your feet, moving in control. Steepen it and the same span might force a deadpoint or a dynamic move, because you can not stay locked off long enough to reach slowly. A heel hook that was a nice-to-have at 30 degrees becomes the only way to keep your body on the wall at 50.
Pick a number and stick with it at first
When you are learning, the most useful thing is to choose one angle and get familiar with it before you go chasing steeper settings. Climb enough problems at, say, 40 degrees and you build a real feel for what each grade demands, which makes the grades mean something to you.
Once you have that baseline, changing the angle becomes a deliberate choice rather than a mystery. Want it harder without jumping a grade? Add a few degrees. Want to work on standing on your feet? Drop it back. The number on the wall is one of the most powerful dials you have, and it stops being confusing the moment you have spent a few sessions feeling what it does.
