Belay devices compared: tube vs assisted-braking
Tubes and assisted-braking devices, how they differ, and how to choose your first.
Your belay device is the link between you and your partner's safety, so the choice deserves more thought than its small size suggests. Broadly there are two families: the simple tube, and the assisted-braking device. Neither is automatically better — they suit different climbers, ropes and situations. Before anything else, one rule sits above the whole discussion: learn to belay with proper, hands-on instruction, and keep a brake hand on the rope at all times no matter what device you hold.
Tube-style devices
A tube, or ATC-style device, is the classic. The rope runs through a slot and over a metal lip, and the friction you create by holding the brake strand below the device is what catches a fall.
- They are simple, light and cheap, with nothing to go wrong mechanically.
- They are versatile: you can abseil on them, and models with "guide mode" — such as the Black Diamond ATC-Guide — let you belay a second directly off the anchor on multipitch routes. The plain Black Diamond ATC covers single-pitch and general use.
- They are fully manual, which is the important caveat. There is no mechanism helping you. If you take your brake hand off, nothing holds the rope. All the catching power comes from your technique.
That manual nature is both the strength and the responsibility. A tube teaches good habits because it forgives nothing, and many instructors start beginners on one for exactly that reason.
Assisted-braking devices
These add a mechanism that helps lock the rope in a fall. They split into two types.
Active devices have a moving cam. The Petzl GriGri is the most popular by a wide margin: when the rope runs suddenly, the cam pivots and pinches it, helping hold the load, and a lever gives smooth, controlled lowering. The GriGri+ builds on this with an anti-panic handle, which limits over-fast lowering, and a top-rope mode. Active devices are a common choice for sport climbing and working routes where you may be holding a hanging climber for a while.
Passive devices add assistance with no moving cam — they use geometry to pinch the rope against the carabiner instead. The Edelrid Mega Jul and Black Diamond ATC Pilot are well-known examples. They are lighter than a GriGri, have nothing to mechanically fail, and many double as abseil-capable tubes.
How to choose your first, and the safety that matters most
Here is the part no review should bury: assisted-braking does not mean hands-free. Every reputable manufacturer states it, and it is the cause of avoidable accidents when ignored. The mechanism is a backup to your brake hand, not a replacement for it. Belay as though the device does nothing, and treat the assistance as the bonus it is.
With that locked in, a few practical pointers:
- Match the device to your rope diameter. Every device has a stated range. A rope too thin for the device feeds and brakes poorly; too thick and it jams. Check both the device and the rope's specs against each other.
- For learning the fundamentals, a tube builds the habits that keep you safe on any device later. Many climbers own both: a tube for abseiling, guide-mode belaying and multipitch, and an assisted-braking device for sport and projecting.
- For sport climbing and belaying falls all day, an active device like the GriGri eases the workload and gives confident lowering, which is why it is so widely used at the crag and in gyms.
- For going light or wanting backup without bulk, a passive device such as the Mega Jul or ATC Pilot is a tidy compromise.
Above all, get taught. Take a belay class, get assessed at your gym, and practise lowering, catching and feeding under supervision until it is second nature. A device is only as safe as the person holding the brake.
The takeaway: pick the device that matches your rope and your main discipline, consider owning a tube alongside an assisted-braking unit, and never let any mechanism tempt your brake hand off the rope. Good technique, learned properly and kept honest, outranks any model on the shelf.
